The Master and Margarita

Tickets for this production can be found here

The Master and Margarita is a promenade, immersive interpretation of Bulgakov's fascinating Russian novel, which we will be taking to the Edinburgh Fringe as part of Zoo Venue's programme. We have had the good fortune to be able to secure St Cuthbert's Church to perform in, a gorgeous ornate building right beside the famous castle (map found at the bottom of the page). We will be performing at 10pm from August 5th-29th apart from the 8th, 12th, 13th, 19th, 20th, 25th and 28th of the month.

This is theatre that transports to the hilt, and makes you feel guiltlessly devilish - OxStu

M&M is a fascinating tale set in Stalinist Russia, following the relationship between an impoverished writer (the Master), his impetuous muse (Margarita) and the events that are set into motion when he decides to write a book about the crucifixion of Jesus from the perspective of Pontius Pilate. This is a novel which exists on thousands of different levels; of shifting, deceiving and transforming like the four enigmatic devils who bound between its pages. Our production wishes to acknowledged the pirouetting, scattershot nature of the original novel, creating a piece of theatre which can react to the ambition of its audience, producing a different telling of this fantastical tale every single night.

Days after seeing The Master and Margarita, sinister recollections of the production still pierce the darkness of the imagination. It is hard to know what it is in this show that cannot be so easily ignored - Cherwell

We have chosen to stage The Master and Margarita in promenade, doing away with the normal audience/performer separation and compelling the audience into the very heart of the action. St Cuthbert's church have been kind enough to offer us a venue space - a physical representation of the power of belief, ornate and imposing, a perfect surrounding for nights in which devils themselves walk the earth

A production of The Master and Margarita was put on in Oxford in November 2015, we have decided to re-cast and re-devise the whole piece to take it up to Edinburgh. We have also combined forces with Manchester University, and have recently been award the name of OUDS/UMDS Summer Collaborative, with both drama societies officially supporting the aims of the project. With the reviews and interest we received in Oxford, coupled with the cast and production team from both Oxford and Manchester universities, we can promise that this will be an experience to remember.

We will be keeping a blog as part of the production which can be found in the menu above. Please email [email protected] with any questions, and a past review of the Oxford run can be found here
